Description: Victorian Mappin & Webb Silver Plated Ornate Casket. This is such an ornate piece. It has been suggested that this is an electro-type and that maybe there is an original casket somewhere that this is copied from although I have not been able to find it. It has a medieval flavour to it with the scenes on its lid being somewhat bloody and grusome - Christian crusades have been suggested ??. The sides have Celtic / Byzantine / Carologian type decoration.
Influences may also have been drawn from the Book of Kell and Book of Hours manuscripts.
The most likely suggestion is however that the scenes are possiblly illustrating the life of David as Protypical King and Ruler. Some suggestions for some of the scenes are as follows:
* perhaps David fighting Goliath
* receiving Goliath's sword and the Loaves of Presentation from the High Priest Ahimelech;
* playing the lyre to soothe King Saul;
* perhaps David and Batsheba;
* perhaps David rescuing the hostages;
* perhaps David fleeing from Jerusalem (or taking it);
